The game is played with a normal deck of 52 cards, without any joker. There are firstly dealt five different hole cards to each player – this is basically the main and only difference between Five Card Omaha and the classic Omaha game- (starting with the small blind and finishing with the dealer position) and the players have the following betting options in every round (the first one is called Pre-Flop, being played only with the hole cards)

-          Check: the player does not want to put more money in the pot

-          Bet: the player wants to bet an amount of money, while no other opponent raised before him. Every player must bet the big blind amount in order to continue the game

-         Raise: the player wants to raise the pot and decides to put a larger amount of money in it

-         Call: one player has this option when the pot was already raised and he decides to continue the game. In this case, he’s obliged to put the same amount of money in the pot as the player that raised before him

-         Re-raise: this option can be used if another player already raised the pot before the playing position

-         Fold: a player can choose not to play the hand if the pot was already raised before and he doesn’t like the cards in order to be able to call or re-raise.

On the flop (third street) a card is burned, and afterwards three cards are dealt face up. The betting options are the same, and if after the flop there are still players who battle for the pot, a new card is burned and it will come up…

The turn (fourth street) is the fourth community card dealt. The betting principles are the same, if more than one player calls the bets made in this round the last card is burned by the dealer and the game will end with…

The river (fifth street), the fifth and last community card dealt. The same betting possibilities apply here. If there is no player willing to call a bet on the river, then the one who made the bet will gain the pot. Otherwise, the game goes to…

Showdown: the players that are still in the game after the river (i.e. called all the bets) must show their hole cards and the best hand wins. In Five Card Omaha, the players MUST use exactly two of their five hole cards and to combine them with three of the community cards in order to create the best possible hand.

- There is no suit ranking in Five Card Omaha.

- If two players have the same hand at showdown, the one with the higher kicker card (the highest card which does not help for a value hand) wins. As an example, between two hands like: 3-3-4-7-K and 3-3-4-7-A the second one wins, because it has the bigger kicker (the Ace)

Hand rankings in Five Card Omaha

1. Royal Flush: A-K-Q-J-10 of any color
2. Straight Flush: any five consecutive suited cards
3. Four of a Kind: four cards of the same kind, plus any other card: A-A-A-A-2
4. Full House: three of a kind plus one pair: A-A-A-K-K
5. Flush: five cards of the same suit, but not consecutive, e.g. A-K-Q-3-2 of spades
6. Straight: five consecutive cards, but not of the same suit
7. Three of a kind: three cards which have the same rank: example A-A-A-7-4
8. Two Pair: two pairs plus any other card, example A-A-K-K-2
9. One Pair: two cards of the same kind plus three other cards, example: A-A-2-5-9
10. High Card: 5 different cards which cannot form a higher hand, for example the hand Q-10-9-7-2 is called “Queen High”

The Five Card Omaha hi/lo game

In the Five Card Omaha hi/lo game the pot is split between the winner of the higher hand (as above) and the winner of the best low hand. There is always a high hand winner but it can happen that no one wins the low hand. In order to have a “low” qualifying hand, a player must have 5 different cards no bigger than 8.

In Five Card Omaha, the ace can be played as high, but also as low. The highest hand is determined as above, while the best low hand, as in Razz, is the wheel straight: A-2-3-4-5.

There are four betting rounds in the Lowball game and the betting options are the same as in Texas Holdem (bet, check, raise, call or re-raise). Firstly, every player is dealt five cards face-down and the first betting round begins (the small blind is always the first player to bet).

The remaining players after the first round have the options to discard from 0 to 5 cards and they will draw new cards. Then, the second betting round begins – the first player to act being the small blind again, or if the small blind folded, the first player still in the pot from the left of the dealer position.

The third and fourth betting rounds are similar to the second one: the players are allowed for two more times to discard from 0 to 5 cards (if they want to) and then the new bets are made, starting with the first player in the pot from the left of the dealer.
Showdown: the players that are still in the game after the fourth betting round (called all the bets) must show their five cards and the lowest hand combination wins.

The lowest hand in Deuce to Seven lowball is 2-3-4-5-7. The straights and flushes count as high hands and the Ace counts only as high. Basically, the hand strength at the Lowball game is the opposite that the one used in the Texas Holdem ranking.

There are many variants of Deuce to Seven Lowball games:

-          Ace to five low – where aces also count as low, and the straights and flushes are not considered as hand combinations

-          Deuce to six low – aces count as high, and the straight and flushes do not count

Ace to six low – aces count as low, but straights and flushes do count.

History of the game

The origin of the Omaha Holdem name is unknown, but certainly it has no connection whatsoever to the Omaha city. Like many other poker games, it was introduced in the Las Vegas casinos in the 1980s. Nowadays, it is the most popular online poker game after Texas Holdem.

The Omaha hi/lo game

In the Omaha hi/lo game the pot is split between the winner of the higher hand (as above) and the winner of the best low hand. If there is no qualifying low hand, the winner of the higher hand takes all the pot.

History of the game

There are two blinds in the Holdem game: the small blind and the big blind, which must be automatically bet by the players in these positions.
